  • Reserve Bank of India

    The Reserve Bank of India (RBI, Hindi: भारतीय रिज़र्व बैंक) is the central banking system of India and controls the monetary policy of the rupee as well as 287.37 billion US-Dollar (2009) currency reserves. The institution was established on 1 April 1935 during the British-Raj in accordance with the provisions of the Reserve Bank of India Act, 1934 and plays an important part in the development strategy of the government.

The Government of India nationalized the Imperial Bank of India in 1955, with the Reserve Bank of India taking a 60% stake, and renamed it the State Bank of India. In 2008, the Government took over the stake held by the Reserve Bank of India.
